CHAMPRO BATTING HELMET
Champro approached Overwatch to design a baseball helmet to declare their independence from the ordinary. With cost and safety in mind, Overwatch set out to design and engineer a helmet that places it ahead of the competition. We increased safety without increasing weight, maximized airflow without compromising shell integrity, and created a style-forward design without sacrificing moldability.
This new helmet needed to make a bold design statement in order to become Champro’s flagship product. At the same time, the helmet needed to comply to NOCSAE standards. Lastly, the helmet needed to be adaptable to left and right-handed batters with an efficient tooling strategy centered around the interchangeable jaw guard.
The overwhelming success of this adult sized helmet has led to the development of a youth size helmet shell. This decision is contrary to most helmet companies which typically add more foam lining to the inside of the adult shell. This standard industry approach is why youngsters playing tee-ball look like bobble heads in motion as they run they bases.
With all of the aesthetic, safety, and adaptable features of this helmet that needed to be in balance, the first shots off the tool dramatically exceeded testing expectations and expedited the time to market.
